|11:03 am - Cinnamon Roll Day|
Christmas has long been Cinnamon Roll Day to me, in addition to all the other religious and cultural holiday meanings.
I don't remember when the family tradition started. I think the origin might have been assisted by a 1950s Betty Crocker cookbook, but I couldn't swear to it. What I remember as an overlay of images, year after year, was making a Christmas tree out of cinnamon roll dough. I remember the pale balls of dough arranged on a baking sheet -- the before -- and the golden cinnamon-and-butter goodness after baking on Christmas morning -- the wonderful after. Others in the family put icing on their rolls, but I didn't much care for that. I was and am about the roll.
Since my mother died, almost a decade ago, I've made cinnamon rolls for my dad and brother(s) on Christmas morning. I say 'made,' but my dad does not stock baking goods, and after a few attempts at scratch and the resulting shopping and spoilage difficulties, I succumbed to frozen rolls for him. Even though I'm not at his house this year for the day itself, during my brief visit to the frozen Plains last week I prepped the rolls for him.
Last night I put on the Christmas music of my youth and made a batch of whole-wheat cinnamon rolls from scratch. The Vince Guaraldi Trio provided the music by which I kneaded the dough; Peggy Lee provided the music for the second rise; a James Taylor Christmas album accompanied the one roll I allowed myself last night. And it was joyful, and it was good, and it was light.
May your day, whether you celebrate Christmas or not, be joyful and good. (And for those of us Whovians, silence will fall when the question is asked -- another tradition honored tonight.)
Happy and merry days to all!
