01:42 pm - The Little Things
Years ago -- years ago -- I was given a bottle of Harveys Bristol Cream Sherry. I feel sure that the givers thought that I would appreciate it, but that drink's much, much too sweet for me. I set the bottle up on the highest shelf in my kitchen, and every so often I would look at it and think, that's a cool bottle.

(The bottle is a rich, rich cobalt blue, which is one of my favorite colors in the world. I especially like the richness of it in glass pieces.)

This morning, for reasons I could not articulate, I decided to Do Something with this aged bottle.

The cork was perished, crumbling away even as the corkscrew went in, and the smell of the sherry was sickly-sweet and alcohol-heavy. I winced as I poured it out. The sherry as it spilled out of the bottle was too dark, hurrying down the drain as if to escape its prison.

I soaked the bottle in hot hot lemon-soapy water long enough to peel off the old labels, long enough to take away all of the nasty ruined sweetness. The bottle's rich blue was lighter afterward. Now it catches the passing light and lets it go.

In my foyer I have a little cherrywood table on which I've had the same items -- a stack of books about travel, some bits of quartz and glass, my late mother's bells, an old candle -- for too long. Armed with my new-old bottle, I rearranged, edited, pulled out glass candleholders that belonged to my grandmother, rearranged again. The blue bottle fits its new home.

I think I'll go get a red rose or two, and let blue and red catch the light together. Sometimes it's the little things that make one happy.

May you have big AND little things to give you pleasure today!

I'm glad you are enjoying the bottle!

I cringe at this memory, but many many years ago when I was working for someone supersophisticated, and I wanted to buy a present, I bought her a bottle of that. Because it was the most classy thing I could afford at the time.

*cringes*

I hope she took it in the spirit it was intended, and your story charmed me :)

I really do love the bottle, and I'm really glad I re-purposed it.

{EDITED TO ADD: I'm sure your gifter did like it, because it was a cool gift. :)]

Mmm, yes, I love cobalt blue glass - I have a paperweight shaped like an abalone shell, in cobalt glass, that sits on the little corner shelf behind the kitchen sink.

Great recycling of something you loved to make it better. Enjoy the new shiny!

ETA: Husband actually loves Bristol Cream. I like the chocolates filled with it, but the drink itself is a bit too cloying.

I've found it's especially nice late in the afternoon, when the sunlight slants across it. :)

What a lovely image, even more now that I know you've found the red rose(s) for full impact.

Your artistic homemaking skills impress the hell out of me. I'm over here trying to get the energy to mop the floor. ((Hugs))

Thank you, but you wouldn't be impressed if you saw the cleaning I still need to do! I too need to mop the floor....

Hugs and energy to you, pal.
