|08:28 am - O entropy! O umbrella(s)!|
Yesterday morning, before I began my and Master Danger's daily walk, I was happy in the possession of two umbrellas -- a recent gift, a small telescoping one, rather heavy and unwieldy but with a beautifully patterned canopy; a small but useful travel brolly, picked up at the grocery store when my old Marks and Spencer one died in a sudden thunderstorm. Today I have one non-functioning umbrella. It is a sad twenty-four hours.
As Master Danger and I were walking yesterday, the cold front blew in. Literally. Like, with gusts of heavy rain. The first gust turned my umbrella -- the pretty but heavy one -- completely inside out. When I pulled it back in, I realized that the cord mechanism that was part of the locking system to hold the canopy open or closed had completely snapped. The only way to keep the umbrella open was to hold it open, my hand clamped to the upper end of the telescope. Luckily it stopped raining shortly thereafter, but still. Non-functioning umbrella.
Not to worry, I thought, I still had my travel brolly. And so I did, until I left it in a downtown establishment last night.
This morning, despite the radar showing No Rain, when Master Danger and I stepped outside we were PELTED with heavy raindrops. I popped back inside (to Master Danger's confusion and displeasure) and retrieved the heavy non-functioning one. (I wear glasses, and thus can't walk bareheaded in the rain singing old Neil Sedaka songs or similar without stepping in front of a speeding car or tripping over a curb or something equally bad. Master Danger is no help, being supremely indifferent to traffic laws and all other hazards except squirrels and other dogs.) Any shelter in a storm, it was.
And so I walked our mile-and-not-quite-three-quarters with the equivalent of a four-pound weight being kept at shoulder-height. And so I say, OW.
I will be shopping for new umbrellas today, despite the clear arc of the universe bending toward No Working Umbrellas for Me. Let us call it not necessity but optimism.
Cheers to all, and may you have protection from all badness.
Ow, indeed. Unpredicted rain is always unfair, and triply so when your umbrellas aren't what they should be!
We seem to have a whole basket full of umbrellas that have one broken vane, or a catch that doesn't work, or odd stains--except one huge golf umbrella that could shelter the neighborhood. I think I need to make a similar purchase.
Hope you have a drier weekend!
The Basket of Umbrellas! Yes, I had that a couple of years ago. May you have a smaller functioning umbrella soon. :)
Cheers! Happy weekend!
I love walking in light rain, but we very rarely have rain with no wind here so umbrellas are pretty much useless. But for those rare days I have a very pretty one that we got at the Buckingham Palace gift shop!
My Marks and Sparks umbrella lasted several years -- but yours sounds MUCH nicer. :)
Cheers! Happy weekend!

The must have accessory here in the UK at the moment is a coat with a hood. The pavements are littered with dead umbrellas due to the horrid combination of strong gusts of wind and heavy rain.
I wish somebody would invent glasses that were impervious to raindrops!
Hope the universe relents and sends you a stylish, but strong umbrella :)
Alas for flooding in the UK! Alas for no rain-shield for glasses!
But cheers for you, K. [hugs]
We have umbrellas but always elsewhere when we find ourselves needing one. It was raining here in Pasadena (second of back to back book fairs) yesterday when clear weather was forecast, so all 3 or 4 umbrellas were still safely at home, 400 miles away. I feel your pain...
Nevertheless, we were v. v. grateful for any additional moisture here in drought country.
I am so happy to see all the rain and snow in Northern California, and I am glad to see rain in SoCal, too -- but I hope you can find an umbrella.
Hugs for book-fair exhaustion, cheers for you.

Good hunting, I hope you find an umbrella worthy of your awesomeness!
I am yet umbrella-less, due to pressures at work and a previously scheduled maintenance appointment for my HVAC system. But tomorrow, an umbrella will be mine. :)
Hugs and a good weekend!
I'm generally a disaster area where umbrellas are concerned.
Alas, Stevie! Solidarity, though, and a good weekend (possibly with a handy umbrella if it's needed).
Poos has claimed the only fully functioning umbrella as her new favorite spot to sleep. And after catching her pawing at to get it unfurled and arranged to her liking, I doubt it's still functional.
Oh, Poos! Yes, I don't think you can call that YOUR umbrella any more, whether it functions or not. ;)
Cheers and hugs!
May your next umbrella stick around and keep functioning for a long time to come!
I'm going for two umbrellas again. Just seems safer. ;)
Hugs, and a good Saturday!
Thank you, L! Hugs and a good Saturday!
