We'll finish up this little story in 3-sentence chunks -- 3 by 3, this time.

As the howling of dogs got closer, Jacqueline dug in her heels (difficult in the powdery snow, but not impossible).

"Mark, tell me what's going on!" she said impatiently.

"Daughter of Summer," he said just as impatiently, "we don't have time for discussion," and pulled her further from this insane, wrought-iron-and-oak gateway in what had been just another Savannah square.

………………………………

"What do you mean by 'Daughter of Summer?" she said, as she stumbled forward. But even as she protested, she thought of heat and jasmine and roses, she thought of hammocks swaying in the slow breeze off the river, she thought of thunderstorm and green and joy.

He stopped, and gazed at her with his sharp forest-green eyes, and said, "Jacqueline, you know."

………………………………

And as he spoke, she thought of winter roses blooming on a strange warm day, she thought of his long coat wrapping around her when the breeze off the water turned cool, she thought of their hands together and joy – and she knew, indeed, knew it all.

"All right, Son of Winter," she said, "take me where I need to be."

"Darling girl, first let me shut the gate," he said.
………………………………..

The Hunter stopped in the midst of her baying hounds, watching the season-gate shut.

Summer needed winter, and winter needed summer, but the two were meant to dance at a distance – not entwined like this.

Smiling a hungry smile, she said to her pack, "Summer and Winter will have to come back sometime, and here we'll be."

FIN. :)

I really enjoyed this story. Hope to see them again sometime.

(Winter has indeed found us up here, we were having quite a nice fall last night.)
