The subtropics, like half of these United States, are cold right now. Freakishly cold. Freakin' cold.
Yesterday afternoon I was driving down a residential street, as you do, and passed a woman sitting in the bright clear-cold sunshine. She had wrapped herself in layer upon layer of clothing, added a thick wool blanket on her lap, and pulled a toque over her hair. For further warmth, she was smoking like the proverbial chimney.
Her Adirondack chair was placed at the edge of her front yard, almost in the street -- near enough that I could see her eyes were closed. The better to soak up the light, I thought. Like a lizard, I thought.
When I looked back in the rearview mirror, she still sat there, somnolent, sun-worshipping. Something fluttered red at her neck.
A scarf, I thought.
A lizard's throat fan, seeking the sun, I thought.
I didn't look back, for fear of what I might see next.
I've been reading Stephen King, so I'm not going to think about this too much.
S King infuses the everyday with menace, doesn't he.
God, I do love the way you paint a picture. [squeeze]
Thank you thank you, L! [hugs]
It is cold enough for shivers! ;-)
Thanks, Gwynne. :-)
Oh don't tell Her Majesty! (You know of her de-lizarding prowess.)
Luckily the Dog of the House wasn't in the car -- for, as you say, otherwise there could have been trouble. ;-)
Thank you for reading! :-)
And I'm still not entirely sure how much is fact and how much is fiction. A pleasantly shuddery surreal vignette.
The woman was real. ;-)
[hugs and warmth]

Vampire Scarf of Doom!
Shares jumper stash.
It might have been a Scarf of Doom, but she was in the sunshine. ;-)
I think you need your jumpers -- it looks cold across the pond! We will all need a great deal of tea, I'm afraid.
Hugs and warmth!
Yep, everyone is getting winter except Southern California and Arizona... It was 72 today!
Sounds utterly delightful. Enjoy the warmth!
I'm sorry, F! [erases the last two sentences of the post to eliminate creepiness]
[sends good thoughts and warmth]
I'm always amazed by the worlds you see.
You are v. kind to indulge me so, S! :-)
Hugs and warmth without lizards on this Wednesday...
Thank you -- and stay warm in the snow, too!
