08:47 am - Cool List
Today, as I prepare for a Work-Day of Madness, I am honoring the late Dixie Carter's portrayal of Julia Sugarbaker by wearing a slightly big-shouldered silk jacket. It makes me feel powerful and feisty and cool (none of which adjectives actually apply to me).

Julia Sugarbaker was a fierce, cool character, entirely suitable as a role model. Today, I want to list fierce, cool women characters, and honor them too. Here's a three-minute free-writing list --

Julia Sugarbaker
Amelia Peabody
Harriet Vane when she wanted to be
Ista (from Bujold's Paladin of Souls)
Eowyn
Beatrice
Kate Beckett
Anya Jenkins
Marion Ravenwood
Princess Leia Organa
Tracy Lord
Cam Saroyan

Give me more! Who's inspiring you today?

That's a very good list.

Alas, I am neither feisty, powerful nor cool, but if I can get through the laundry without forgetting to change washer and dryer settings as needed, I'll do. It's Monday, it's rainy and at some point I have to go out and xerox our tax returns (because I am just that paranoid, and I'll feel safer having copies on file).

Anyhoo, I'd add to your above list Emma Peel, Kate Beckett and Olivia Dunham. *smiles*

And I apologize - Beckett is on your list, and I didn't see her. brain not found. *grovels, abjectly*

No need to grovel! Besides, she's cool enough to be mentioned twice. :-)

How could I forget Emma Peel! Of course!

And I think you're doing fine. (Xeroxing tax returns is Smart, not paranoid.)

Hugs and good cheer!

Thank you, C, and a good week to you!

Emma Peel, yes -- and let's include Tessa, black-hearted though she be, because she is awesome! :-)

Many of my favorite CHARACTERS have been mentioned already, so I'll add some real world ladies:

Elizabeth I
Victoria
Julia Child

{HUGS!}

Oh! I thought of some! Has anyone yet mentioned Dana Scully?
Not to mention Donna Noble and Martha Jones.

Mary Russell comes to mind. So does Cordelia Vorkosigan. :)

Totally agree with Dana, Donna and Martha {G} And all the Designing Women because they had good traits and willingly admitted to their faults.

Great, great list! Good Morning!

Of course, Mary Russell! (Especially appropriate since the next book is coming out at the end of the month...)

And you're quite right about ALL the Designing Women, too. :-)

Hugs and a good day!

I'm glad you mentioned Leia and Marion. They're two examples I wanted to use in my feminist heroines discussion if there'd been more time.

Leia and Marion are wonderful -- more than just pawns in the boys' stories in which they find themselves. [nods]

Happy end of week, by the way!
