08:40 am - The Question of Hotspur
I didn't watch all of the political debate last night because, to be honest, I've already decided whom I'm going to vote for, and I felt the deep need to have a glass of champagne and watch Spooks Season 1 Episode 5 (the one with Jools Siviter at the opera, and Nicholas Farrell's cabinet minister/CIA-asset sleeping with Tessa, and Tom Quinn in sunglasses) instead.

[Side-note: can I just say that as much as I enjoy House, which is quite a lot, I'd give up that whole series if we just could have had ONE Brit-length series of The Jools Siviter Show.]

Anyway, the ten minutes of the debate I did watch, and the clips I've seen online this morning, keep reminding me of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part One. While that's a hugely complicated history play (three storylines, no waiting) with daddy issues and Falstaff and wotsit, one of its most important elements is the doubling/conflict between Harry Percy, aka Hotspur, and Prince Hal.

HOTSPUR: I've been around forever, and I've been in combat, and I'm the flower of chivalry, and what is WITH all these whippersnappers disrespecting me? Especially that son of a bitch Hal, who hasn't earned anything! Rage! Rage! They don't call me Hotspur because of my looks, you know... The rebellion is ON, assholes.
[metaphorically speaking, burns bridges behind him]

In another part of England:
PRINCE HAL: Feudal politics are really last century. While you might think that I'm merely drinking in the tavern, I am in fact taking the pulse of the community. Also, I'm embodying the leadership skills necessary for the modern era, leaving that medieval stuff in the past where it belongs. In fact you might think that I've time-traveled and read Machiavelli, but I couldn't possibly comment.
[from somewhere in the ether, smooth music plays: "Who's the man who won't cop out/When there's danger all about? Prince! Hal! (Can you dig it?)"]

HOTSPUR hangs out with his fellow rebels:
HOTSPUR: Damn, you people are idiots! Screw you!
OWEN GLENDOWER: Screw you. I can call spirits from the vasty deep.
HOTSPUR: So can I or any other man. Although I am better than you because I am the goddamn flower of chivalry, and I make decisions faster than you, and in conclusion, my friend, you are an IDIOT. RAGE.
FELLOW REBELS: Way to alienate your friends and break up an alliance, Hotspur. See if we show up at the battle.

At the battle of Shrewsbury:
HOTSPUR: So where are all my fellow rebels? Fled? ASSHOLES.
[theme music from the ether: "They say that Prince Hal is a bad mother -- (Shut your mouth")]
HOTSPUR: I seriously hate that guy. [grabs sword]
PRINCE HAL: [arrives, sword in hand] Hullo, Harry. You know, you were a great leader once, but your time is done.
HOTSPUR: I don't think so. RAGE.
[they fight]
PRINCE HAL: Man, if you're going to win this thing, you've got to look at me.
HOTSPUR: I HATE YOU, whippersnapper. [Hal runs him through] Okay, that's just WRONG, I'm Hotspur, I was the flower of chivalry and now all my honor is turned to food for w--
[dies]
PRINCE HAL: "W"? Oh, right, worms. Anyway, old fellow, I really am sorry because once upon a time you were the -- what did you keep calling yourself? -- flower of chivalry, but, you know, I'm gonna be Henry V. Can't fight destiny, and it's time for a change.

And now we know why I don't talk about politics. [beam]

A merry Saturday to you all!

Loves it! Perfect.

Where's Falstaff when we need him, though?

Heh -- I'm not a big fan of Falstaff, to be honest, esp. when he starts war-profiteering in the final acts of 1 Henry IV. So I left him out. ;-)

Hugs, and thanks, and a v. good Saturday to you and yours! :-)

Certainly not a morally admirable character, for sure--at any point.

Thanks for the very accurate fun!

We did Henry the 4th, Part One in my high school. Because our drama class was 98% female, most of the rebellion roles ended up being cast backwards of Shakespeare (the girls were cast as guys); I played Owen Glendower. I didn't get to learn the Welsh parts. *g* I always picture it in my head with that cast - I think we did a pretty good job, for a high school drama department; and since it was right at the height of the ORIGINAL Star Wars fever, we did it in futuristic style, with ray guns and space ships instead of swords and horses.

Unfortunately, it seemed last night that McSame was Hotspur and Obama was the cautious Prince Hal. Of course, considering Hal won, maybe that's better... *g*

Happy Saturday!

Oh, I love the play -- and how fun to play Owen Glendower! :-))

I think it's MUCH better to be Prince Hal. MUCH. ;-)

Hugs, and a happy Saturday to you and yours!

I wanted to play Hotspur something fierce, but that role went to Heather (who was awfully good in it, as I recall)...

I don't think our drama teacher meant for all the "evil" characters to end up female and all the "good" ones male, but it did end up that way... hee!

Hmm, my memory is v. bad, what Shakespear play is the Canadian election? Because you make them sound interesting. Instead of just bloody annoying.

The Canadian election is going by so quickly that I can't quite figure out what would be the best connection. ;-)

Hugs, and may the annoying parts be easily ignored!

NO, No! You need to talk about it more! Surely there are more parodies you can write! We have five more weeks of this...we need more of that kind of thing.
Seriously, that was inspired. ((hugs))
