For reasons I can't quite pin down, I was slammed with a nasty bout of insomnia last night.

Actually, the pugilist metaphors aren't exactly right. It was more that horrible sense of a racing mind tugging my body awake every time I felt sleep slipping up on me. The whole awfulness was exacerbated by sticky heat -- a cold front's dropping through at noon, they say, but in the past twenty-four hours we've moved from May weather to the humid discomfort of early July.

So, after not quite four hours of sleep, I got up. Did my morning routine. Checked on the leading edge of the rain, which weather.com said would be arriving just after Master Danger and I usually get home. Decided we'd go out a little early, riding the time of sunrise even though clouds meant no actual sun would be seen.

We went out into the thick grey morning -- wind whipping the palm trees and oaks into menacing percussion, the barking of the little dogs next door. Master Danger wanted to run, as we usually do when we start out, and so I managed a bit of a jog... but oh, I was tired.

We did a shortened walk -- only 1.7 miles -- with intervals of jogging across streets and whenever Master Danger saw his neighborhood persecutors, the two Jack Russells who bark at him as soon as he shoots into their view. (He has somehow been 'trained,' by which I mean he has trained himself, to start jogging away at their first barks.) By the last half-mile, we were both hot and uncomfortable, but we made it back.

And now the rain's slipping away, just like sleep did last night. I hope for rain. I despair of a nap.

I know that flavor of insomnia well; your brain just won't settle down. *hugs*

Sympathies on the hot weather; here it is apparently August, or possibly September. The high yesterday was 90°, and today it's supposed to be several degrees higher. Brushfires here we come.

I wish you better weather and a chance for a proper restful sleep.

I think your town and mine both set near records yesterday! (We were 91.)

There's been rain, though, and soon, I hope, there will be sleep. ;)

Oh, insomnia. So unpleasant, not just while it happens, but the rest of the day as well. You had an excellent solution in just getting up and going out. Hope sleep comes tonight, even if the rain doesn't--and hope rain comes soon.

It has been a brain-fog sort of day. Oh well.

We did get a bit of rain, though, and some of the pollen has been washed away. Small mercies!

I hate that squirrel cage insomnia...like you, I tend to just get up and start doing something since sleep is clearly impossible. I'm so sorry you can't take the day off and have a nap, but probably better overall to wait until the usual home to collapse rather than get your sleep pattern even more out of whack.
