|09:01 am - Wednesday Wish-place: More Gardens|
One of the things I've noticed in the morning long walks Master Danger and I take is that our Small Town seems to be moving ever so slightly away from trying to achieve green lawns as the front-yard landscape of choice.
Our little part of the subtropics is actually hell on turf grass, to be honest. It requires fertilizers that are problematic for the water supply and pesticides which are problematic for water supply and wildlife, and even so the struggle is never-ending. In most subdivisions and/or McMansion-communities, grass is still legislated via home-owner associations, but my little town is a bit more free-form.
And so, landscape choices are more Florida-friendly. And so, less turf grass*, is more organic gardening, more flowers and more courtyards.
*This is a mixed blessing for me: I am hugely allergic to grass, but oh, I do love the smell of a freshly mowed lawn despite how ill it makes me.
Anyway, gardens! Courtyards! Let's dream.
Here's a courtyard on an Andalusian estate.
Or does that not provide enough shade? How about Tricia Guild's garden, with bonus steps. :)
And let's end with this Gucci-sponsored garden, which echoes an iconic 1966 silk scarf, which won a prize at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
(I offer handkerchiefs and Benadryl to those of us who sneeze at the idea of all that Outside.)
And, before I go, a happy birthday to stateless82!
Cheers, and may you visit the places you love today, even if it's only in wishes.
Ah, if I could afford to have our entire yard torn out and replaced with xeriscaping...
I am right with you.
This year I'm at least working on lessening the amount of 'grass' (really just weeds) in the front, with a new xeriscaped bed and mulch for days, but it's really not enough.
Cheers and a great Wednesday!
Lovely, even if the Chelsea Flower Show is Evol.
I have thought of your sufferings, and send hugs and meds.
That place looks WONDERFUL. Cheers for your time living across from it -- I bet it was life-enhancing.
Thank you for sharing, L! And happy Wednesday to you. [hugs]
There is something so enchanting about a courtyard garden, isn't there?
But I do love the scent of newly cut grass, even if the maintenance of a lawn is beyond me.
Love a courtyard garden, especially in arid areas. And we know I love enclosed gardens anyway. ;)
Cheers! Hope your late-spring day is beautiful, ALH.
We have a few houses in our neighborhood who are trying to go away with grass in the front yard, but they're not succeeding very well. Either because there's not a lot that grows well here or because it probably takes more work to have a courtyard feel and look good.
Oh, interesting point.
Here, the first few months of any xeriscaping tends to look bare and less appealing; the plants have to grow into their spaces, basically. I've planted bush daisies which look really tiny and out of scale now, but in a month or two should have grown and filled out. Fingers crossed, anyway. ;)
Cheers and a good Wednesday!

Lovely gardens. I walked around our local park with the Elder Daughter this morning. There was a fine assortment of birds, and also some... very cute... bunnies. :)
How wonderful to walk around the park with the Elder Daughter! (Even if there were bunnies.)
Cheers and a lovely Thursday!
It is literally snowing pollen here right now. I'm sending you my leftover antihistamines. ((Hugs))
Gaaah. Yes, that's late February through late April here, and it sucks.
[offers tissues and hugs]
Sends you ((hugs)) right back. Btw, I'm expecting Only Lovers Left Alive fic any second now. ;);)
I love the one with steps too -- and I envy your shade! (I do realize that it cuts down on what you can grow, however....) I am living in the wrong corner of the world, clearly.
