10:57 am - Rules for Living
Last night after supper I was washing the dishes by hand (as you do if you don't have a dishwasher), and I found both the scent of the washing-up liquid (Mrs Meyers' lemon verbena) and the act of hand-washing so soothing that I decided to expand my reach to some of the glassware I have on display. And, since I was in the business of mellowness at the time, I put on Sade's first album to accompany my gentle labor.

As I was washing the champagne glasses, I had the following thoughts in the following order:
*I do love these Waterford champagne flutes.
*I would like a glass of Champagne right now, because Sade and Champagne go together.
*I don't have any Champagne in the fridge.
*New rule for living: a split of good French Champagne should be readily available at all times for just such an emergency.

Guardian columnist Lauren Laverne wrote a column this past weekend about "Life Lessons School Should Teach You",
including one Rule for Living that I would agree with but expand: Never date anyone who is rude to waiters, she says, which I think should be Never be friends with anyone who is routinely rude to anyone who serves them.

All Rules for Living must be individual, however: I don't believe in a blanket Rule for Living, unless it is Be kind to others. So, for example, my Don't Turn On The Oven When The Air-Conditioner Is On rule is my own, borne out of many years in v. hot deserts and the subtropics; I don't imagine others will follow it. ;)

Some of my other Rules for Living:

Always say yes to boots.
Strong colors mean strong emotions, so use wisely.
No caffeine after 3 or 4 pm, unless one must be awake late.
Chase sunrises.
Laugh when you can and sometimes when you can't.

What's one of your personal Rules for Living?

Cheers, and may you find a star to guide you in the next day or so. :)

Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.

When you are happy, and/or in the presence of beauty, stop and pay attention. Savor those moments.

I am adding your 'split of champagne' rule to my list, it's a good one.

Yes! To the split of champagne above all.

And I've said it before but it bears repeating...never be less kind to yourself than you would be to anyone else you love.

Oh, and hooray for Mrs. Meyers. I'm partial to the geranium scent.

You offer an important addition and/or correction, ALH. Thank you, and hugs!

Be kind, for everyone you meet is walking a hard road.

I try to remember this when someone is gratuitously rude to me.

That is right, and it's so hard to remember. Thank you for an important addition.

Cheers and a good end of Monday, Cronopio.

Never click on comments to any online news story.

No oven is basic survival. Some days I'm not even sure about the toaster oven.

I love your rules, except I find that the boots need an oven-style corollary: in my life, it is often too warm for boots.

Also, the older I get, the worse I am about following any rules, much to my own misfortune. Sad, really.

I do need some champagne flutes, although I am thinking of getting some old-style glasses at my local second-hand store, when I find some lovely ones. Cuz, it's easier to play Hepburn with the, whadyacallem, old-style champagne thingies.

I totally understand your thinking it can be too warm for boots. I am pretty much alone in still wearing cowboy boots in the summertime (with skirts and bare legs). ;)

Coupes! You could totally rock a coupe for that Katharine-Hepburn-drinks-Champagne vibe. I support this endeavor.

Hugs hugs!

This was originally a travel rule, but became a life rule:

Never Pass Up a Chance.

Originally, it was meals and rest stops, but then I began to realize how hard to find a lot of things might be. It works pretty well.

I'm not one for rules, but I do love the following recommendations:

A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.
Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got.
If you have the power to make someone happy, do it. The world needs more of that.
Don't complain about things you're not willing to change.
If your compassion doesn't include yourself, it is incomplete.
Love what you have.

Do not sacrifice comfort for fashion. Get the most fashionable version of a comfortable shoe, pair of jeans, etc.
Do not engage in arguments with people over the internet. Especially if it concerns fandom. ((Hugs))

As for one of my own . . .

Wear scarves, but make sure they are beautiful ones.
