09:42 am - Installment Story, Part One: Tea History Magic Thanks to Paratti, Janus_74, Anne_D, Gwynnega, and Ljrags, for giving me words for this (likely only a few days) of an installment-a-day short story. I'm calling it "Tea History Magic." Without further ado, Part One --
Melinda Jane Carr – of the St Augustine Carrs, as her sainted mother used to say – inspected her tea-table. Set for her expected guest and her, it was linen tablecloth and napkins the color of magnolia blossoms and a set of spring-green patterned Noritake china her great-grandmother Carr had purchased in Tokyo a little over a century ago and carried back over seas and continents, miraculously unbroken.
Jake wouldn’t give one good damn about the table, but she needed to keep her spirits up. Restless, she went to the sliding glass doors of her cottage living room. The Atlantic stretched out, seemingly forever, on the other side of the glass. She stood and watched the waves wash over the sand. Less sand than there used to be. Erosion was a terrible thing. Also climate change.
Not all change was bad, however. She rubbed her thumb over her now bare ring finger, where diamonds used to glitter like the sea. The doorbell rang – the chorus of “Happy Days are Here Again.” She turned, smiling the society smile her mother had taught her, fingering the charm-bag in the pocket of the dress she’d sewn herself. With a thought she lit the candles on the tea-table, and flames swirled inside the old hurricane glasses. She felt the power running along her nerves, like fire following a trail of gasoline. “It’s open, baby,” she called.
More tomorrow. :)

Very promising, I'm looking forward to tomorrow! Thank you, A, thank you! [hugs] Thanks and thanks twice! Hugs! You had me with ocean, but also lighting the candles....
I'm already waiting for the next part! Thank you thank you! :) The new part will be up in a few minutes.
Happy day to you! Loved it, and looking forward to next part. Thank you so much! :) Happy day to you. Hey, who are these people and where are they from, so I can go catch up? This is the start. :) I'm just playing around with an original short story, done in installments.
Cheers and a happy Monday to you! Love the doorbell. And the song choice. An intriguingly specific character detail.
Do people still have doorbells that play a song? I don't actually know if doorbells still play songs! I'm hand-waving that it's an older house. :)
Cheers! Thank you! :) Cheers and a happy Sunday to you. |
