|04:01 pm - Combating Sore Throats and Sneezes, Post #56|
Due to a change in meds, I am actually MORE allergy-ridden than usual, basically feeling like I have a low-level cold. (I am assured that It Will Get Better. I live in hope.)
So here are some of my strategies for combating sore throats, sneezes, bad sleep, and a slight earache:
1) I started watching Partners in Crime, the recent BBC adaptation of Agatha Christie's Tommy&Tuppence detective/spy stories, starring Jessica Raine and David Walliams. Or rather, Partners in Crime, the recent BBC adaptation with a fairly fabulous Tuppence and a horribly written Tommy, oh dear oh dear.
As a current devotee of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. reboot (which radically reimagines Illya Kuryakin), I shouldn't grumble. But here's the deal. First, the new PiC adaptation updates the first stories from the 1920s, directly post-WWI, to the 1950s and the Cold War. (WHY??) Second, the new adaptation gives us not the perfectly competent, slightly ginger, former soldier and then happily employed intelligence man Tommy of the Agatha Christie stories but a middle-aged, hapless, under-employed Tommy who has no direction and is all but steering his family into the poorhouse. (WHAT?? WHY???) The point of the original Tuppence and Tommy partnership is that she provides verve and native genius, he provides ballast and competence. Third, in the first hour of the show my favorite couple is playing out old tired marriage-tropes (she doesn't seem to be sexually interested in him at all). Boo.
That having been said, it's pleasant undemanding entertainment when one is under the weather. But it's not the Tommy&Tuppence adaptation I was hoping for.
2) I have returned to listening to my Beatles CDs. Those four lads had something, didn't they?
3) I have been cleaning out a closet, which makes me feel incredibly virtuous as I prep the donation sack(s).
What do you do to combat a slight case of Under the Weather?
May you feel better than me, may your week go smoothly. :)
Huge points for cleaning out closets!
Making notes of your TV recs.
I should clean, but OMG it's just so overwhelming. I think maybe tomorrow I will just call someone in. WHO LIVES LIKE THIS???
I think you should give yourself a year's worth of breaks and DEFINITELY call someone in!

Those Beatles did have something. :-)
I've been cleaning/decluttering this afternoon. It makes me feel virtuous, but I think I've had about enough of it for today!
Hurrah for the Beatles and decluttering! Yay you! :)
Closet cleaning is always a good thing! This summer I cleaned and organized my closet, and vacuumed up some serious dust bunnies. I boxed up all the shoes my arthritis no longer allows me to wear and put them in the basement storage room. It's the first step towards actually getting rid of them. Some of them are so lovely, it's hard to let go. :(
I hope the meds kick in soon. And the Beatles did indeed have something. :) ((Hugs))
I know how you feel about letting go of beautiful things that no longer work for you. I'm trying to tell myself that someone else will be able to appreciate them if I let them go...

Yay for closet cleaning! Boo for cold symptoms, whatever the reason! I hope you feel better soon, and that you acquire some lovely item of clothing as a reward for all that virtuous work.
I have to *stop* acquiring beautiful clothing to wear, to be honest. My wardrobe is full. :)
Hugs hugs, and a good Tuesday to you!
Cleaning a closet is enough to make me sick to start with! That's a project that requires the height of energy and enthusiasm. But my closet may be much more dire than yours (and I'm sure they're smaller and hence more crammed with junk).
Boo for taking liberties with Agatha Christie's fine characters! I haven't seen it, but it sounds not right at all.
What I do when under the weather is first of all lie down, and second drink soothing drinks, like ginger tea with honey. And then, like you, find some fine bingeable media. I'm currently in a direction you probably don't find interesting, the Longmire western series which is about to be revived on Netflix. I'm well, so maybe it wouldn't be as fine if I weren't, but distraction is the important thing.
Hope your cures work wonderfully, and soon!
My closets are very small (I live in a 1950s house built before the age of walk-in closets) and I am very much in need of editing them. Baby steps. :)
Ginger tea is something I need to be drinking!
Hugs and cheers for your day!

The Partners in Crime adaptation sounds a little disappointing, too bad Tommy was changed so much.
Hope the new medicine kicks in soon!
The Partners in Crime choices are really really disappointing. :(
Cheers and good thoughts for the rest of your Tuesday!
What do I do to combat? Tea! Lots of tea, things with ginger, honey lemon cough drops.....
I'm shocked, shocked about the Tommy & Tuppence. That sounds Not Good.
Have you watched the BBC series "The Fall" with Gillian Anderson as a Met Police Detective Superintendent who was brought to Ireland to do some internal investigating, put together two murders as by the same killer, and when a third turned up, headed the investigation. The twist is we also are following the serial killer as well - a grief counsellor - and his downward spiral. There are two series of five another on the way. Gillian is AMAZING.
I am mainlining lemon-mint Ricolas. [nods] It doesn't address the real issue, but they do taste good.
I haven't watched The Fall, although I've contemplated it. It sounds more hard-boiled than I tend to enjoy, but I have it queued on a watchlist. :)
The Partners in Crime sounds so disappointing. I wonder why they went that way with it?
I'm about to finish watching the final season of Boardwalk Empire which also made some strange choices, and was way violent, but some of the acting was amazing.
I think the next time I want to crawl under the covers and hide, I'll be bringing Ann of Green Gables with me.
I can't figure out the rationale behind switching up Partners in Crime at all. But I'm sure they had some reason... [is not sure]
Anne of Green Gables is an excellent choice for hiding under the covers! I tend to like the later books a bit more, but the first is still awesome. :)

I hope the allergies get better soon.
Allergy testing in a month....
Hugs hugs, mate!
Belatedly -- I CANNOT understand the writing for this Christie adaptation. And Walliams can be cooler than that, so it's not JUST the casting....
Hugs hugs! Yay for your feeling lighter and discarding what you don't need!
