|05:01 pm - In Praise of Hugh Grant, Post #57|
So, per the Anglophenia blog, apparently it's Hugh Grant's 55th birthday today. And indeed, USA Today notes that it's Grant's birthday today and Colin Firth's birthday tomorrow.
It is perhaps apostasy, but much as I respect Colin Firth and his choices, my heart has always preferred Hugh Grant. Strange, perhaps, because so many of Grant's projects have not been, well, good -- but I like his lightness of touch and his line readings and his look. (I like his look even more now that he's a silvering fox.)
From beautiful Chopin in Impromptu to Alexander Waverly in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., with all the romantic-comedy stops in between (not forgetting his immortal cad Daniel Cleaver), he's given me great pleasure. It's a shame he didn't do more period work after he reached fame, but Sense and Sensibility still stands. About a Boy is brilliant. His turns in various Richard Curtis films, whilst reviled elsewhere on the internet, always made me happy; his Prime Minister in Love Actually is perhaps my favorite. It makes me a little sad that we only have one Hugh Grant/Sandra Bullock rom-com, because damn it, those two could have been as great in multiple films as Powell & Loy or Grant (Cary) & Hepburn.
And I'm ready to see what he might do as a character actor.
Happy 55th birthday to Hugh Grant. :)
May you celebrate your middle of the week in all good ways!
I love Hugh Grant, too. Funny, I didn't really like him in Music And Lyrics all that well. I like Drew Barrymore, too, but the two of them really didn't have chemistry.
I liked him in Music and Lyrics, but I absolutely agree that the movie would have worked better without the romance -- just Barrymore and Grant as friends and colleagues.
Cheers for your day!

May he continue to delight:)
I hope he finds some good roles in this new phase of his career! :)
Hugs hugs, mate.

Daniel Cleaver is the best cad ever!
None better. :)
Cheers for your Thursday evening!
I hope he had a great day. I went back and rewatched some of his movies, so I was made happy. :)
Cheers and hugs to you!
I don't know whether I prefer Grant or Firth, but do know I like Grant! Sense and Sensibility was absolutely excellent.
And, completely off-topic, this
seems made for you...
He was wonderful in Sense and Sensibility, not to mention being (in the words of Emma Thompson) "repellently gorgeous". :)
I LOVE that video. Thank you so much for sharing!
Cheers and a great weekend!
It looks like Grant is doing better now that he has accepted that he is in Silver Fox territory. For a while it looked like he was stuck in a rut, aging badly in the same type of rom-com role he'd done well in his youth. I'm not much of a rom-com person -- I enjoy the good ones, but I am fairly harsh on the bad ones. It's good to see that he might be entering an era of embracing his age, that's much more attractive attitude IMO.
Hugs hugs, Nell. Good thoughts to you and yours.
