|08:05 pm - In Praise of (Some) Men with Earrings, Post #2|
(Status update: heat resumed; Master Danger lupine again in the face of repairpersons; work; budget; tea.)
This entry is simply a personal opinion, without force or censure, but the comments on a Tom and Lorenzo post re Harrison Ford in Men's Journal got me thinking.
I very much like (some) men wearing earring(s).
First of all, re those Harrison Ford pictures, let me just say 'Sweet fancy Moses.' But I must disagree with the commenters on that site who decried the earring as a discordant note in Mr Ford's presentation or, and I can't even believe this was said, as a "poser" element. Because, y'all, this is Harrison Goddamn Ford. HARRISON FORD. He is the antithesis of "poser." He is himself.
Also, a well-deployed earring or two is the mark of a certain kind of relaxed, occasionally louche man of a certain age. It suggests he still plays his guitar. It suggests that he looks good in boots. It suggests that he was around in the 70s and 80s, and, while wiser and probably healthier now, has the muscle-memory of a certain kind of swagger that got him in and out of trouble back in the day. [This is the same whether the earring-wearing gentleman is straight or gay. It's about comfort in his own skin, not about sexual identity.] Harrison Ford. Anthony Head. That sort of guy.
Or, long may his memory be a blessing, the late Gregory Hines.
True, it's not a look for all. True, it often seems quite poser-ish on the very young or the Justin Biebers of the world. But Harrison Ford? Oh no, child. Oh no. He can wear as many earrings as he damn well pleases.
I shall return to more serious topics someday, but I do feel better expressing this opinion now. :)
Cheers, and may you enjoy being in your own skin today!
Yep, I agree with you! I'm not sure I can define the line between men who can and men who cannot, but it's instantly recognizable, ain't it?
I actually spent time yesterday going through a mental list of men, thinking about who could and could not pull it off. Yes, hard to quantify, but it's very real. :)
Cheers for your Wednesday!
*Also- yay for heat!*

I'm with you. Harrison Ford can certainly carry it off, and good on him. Anthony Head, in "Band Candy", with earring? [fans self] Besides, it's only been within the last two hundred years or so that men stopped wearing earrings anyway.
I was actually thinking of Tony Head in person, who's sort of raffish and charming. :)
Hugs and a good day for recovery to you!
Thanks, friend! :) Hugs hugs hugs.
Cheers and hugs for your Wednesday. :)
John Malkovich--wish I could find a picture. Some men just have it.
Yes, Malkovich is a great example!
Cheers for your day. :)

He can indeed.
Yes, I mean -- seriously. :)
Cheers and hugs!
Hee! Oh yes. D's diamond stud was, I think, very doable--now that he has two, I note a difference in his own attitudes toward wearing them. At the start, a single pierce was rockin', hip, cool... but two was gay and not for him. Now, six years later, a moment of teasing him about piercing the other ear took only two minutes to turn into his sitting in the chair teasing the girl about old guys getting earrings. I think he can pull off two NOW, but could not have done so THEN. So, something there, but not much to contribute to your impeccable taste in men. Which is, as always, impeccable. :fans self at thought of Band Candy::
D can absolutely pull the earrings off now! It's a question of getting into one's skin and dressing according to one's vibe. :)
Cheers and hugs to you!
Absolutely some men can pull it off, and Harrison Ford is one of them. I remember thinking the same thing of Sean Connery in Highlander when I first saw it.
Yes, Sean Connery! Absolutely!
Cheers for your Thursday, T. :)
And c'mon, he's that that thing since he and Melissa Matheson, rest her soul, split. Late '80's? (He does look blisteringly hot)
Yes, he's had the earring a long time -- and he got it because he was hanging out with the late Ed Bradley and Jimmy Buffett, which to me is so clearly NOT POSER at all. :)
Cheers and hugs to you!
And to you!
(Ed Bradley's gone? Damn. He was so awesome.)
::goes to check WIkipedia and realizes he's been gone a LONG time:: Oh good gracious.

Thanks for the link that I might not have seen otherwise....oh, my! ::swoons gently::
He is a force of nature. :)
Cheers and hugs!
Oh, I love that 1997 pic! Harrison Ford is just in a class of his own. :)
Cheers and hugs! Happy weekend!
I like the earring. I also remember having much joy a few years back when Brian Croucher got his ear pierced while filming for a particularly bad gangster film (in which he only had a few lines IIRC).
I am, however, in agreement with the commenters about proper muscles acquired through physical labour.
Hurrah for joys, no matter where we find them. :)
I thought about this post when I saw this picture of David Bowie
--of course he did an earring well, like everything else.
And of course, Iman.
That photograph is everything.
Thanks for sharing it, because yes, he wore an earring as beautifully as he did everything else.
