Item the First: It's August 1st.
Item the Second: It is Too Hot.
Item the Third: I am the whiniest whiner who ever whined. So we shall move on.

So, now, halfway through Fic-bites Ahoy, a transitional chapter. (Thank you guys for humoring me with this, btw. [grin]) We left off with above them rises the beginnings of storm.

.............................
That afternoon Alice finishes her loan project, counsels her employee Shanika regarding a balance of home difficulties and work, and then walks home. The blade Morgan gave her never leaves her pocket.

It's good, she thinks, to get the weapon used to her warmth.

That afternoon Morgan drops by the high school to do some necessary paperwork, delegates (upon request) an opening-day task to his associate principal, and then walks home, where he sets fresh wards around the border of his and Alice's property. He leaves only the gate unprotected.

It's good, he thinks, to know the way salt and storm will arrive.

When Alice gets home, Morgan is waiting for her on the porch, as he usually is. The wine is poured, the nuts and raspberries he favors for late afternoon snacks are ready. But he is wearing old, scarred brown boots instead of going barefoot, and beside him lie two folded summerweight cloaks.

She bends to touch the silk-and-hemp fabric, then sends him a sideways smile. “You're feeling traditional, my heart?”

He smiles in return. “Why not?”

“Why not?” She kisses that crooked smile. “Because they will use tradition, of course.”

“Not like we will,” he says. And that sends her, laughing through old bitterness, upstairs to change into her own boots and jeans, and that brings her, laughing more easily, downstairs to sit entwined with him, sharing the golden wine.

As afternoon becomes evening, the River Deep which blesses the Stonewoods' town begins to hiss wherever it touches its rocky banks. Curls of steam rise from the rocks and rip apart in the freshening stormwind, and the willows along the course flutter their long branches like battle flags.

On the River Road there's no traffic. But the clouds above dip lower, lower, silver over black road. At the bends of the road, where the clouds are briefly thinnest, a car the color of cloud emerges and then disappears, emerges, disappears.

Inside the car, two women: the elder, pale and warrior-like, drives with a vengeance; the younger, pale and ethereal and no less dangerous, paints invisible pictures on her window and dreams of metal and blood.

The bridge into town shimmers out of cloud, just for a moment, and the elder urges the car forward.

“Oh yes,” the younger says, “we're here,” and claps her hands as they reach the bridge.

Above them, the storm breaks.
....................

May your day be full of the best kind of arrivals and beginnings. And no whining! (At least not from me.) :-)

Thank you thank you, L, for kindness. :-)

(Alas, the cool breezes didn't reach here. Their arrival is scheduled for October.)

"Blurgh" is the perfect word-sound for August. Yes indeed.

But "cheers" and "thanks" are the perfect words for you, H_P, because I am cheered and I send thanks fory our kind words. [hugs]

In reverse order: you will realize how Hot it is when I tell you that I can't drink alcohol, even the life-giving Champagne, in these temperatures.

But I can send thanks, more thanks, and hugs! Happy Sunday, ALH!

You are a lovely person, Gwynne. Who apparently likes characters who are not. :-)

Thank you thank you, plus good-Sunday thanks!
