05:43 pm - Exceptions to the Rule
People who know me know that I am not, it has to be said, a Francophile.

It's not that I am a Francophobe, mind you -- I do not shudder when I see a story or film set in that country, I do not replace 'French' with 'freedom' to describe fries, I'm sure I'd really enjoy a trip to Provence. (In fact, a trip to Avignon is on ye olde bucket list.) But I do not swoon at the idea of Paris, I have no mental map of it, I just... you see.

(I gave my heart to England when I was small, and there it remains.)

BUT. But but but. I do have exceptions.

Champagne should be French. Yes, there are fine and tasty California sparkling wines made methode Champenoise, but it's not the same. (Which reminds me that it has been months since I've had a glass of Champagne, and that horrible drought must be ended soon.)

And when I see a video like the Garance Dore video of the Chanel Spring-Summer 2011 Show, I do falter from the strict and narrow path. Yes, the art(ifice) of it! Yes, the order and the whimsy! And, last but in no possible world least, the amazing and wicked cool Ines de la Fressange!

What is an exception to one of your rules? What do you love that you're surprised you love?

And as you ponder, may you slide happily into your weekend!

I must ponder this further, but, as always, I enjoy reading your thoughts.

Thank you for pondering! And hugs and good thoughts for the evening, too.

Champers should definitely be French. Agreed.

Shares a glass:)

I agree about champagne, even though I don't know that my palate can really distinguish between actual champagne and California sparkling wines...

You might be surprised! I know that *my* palate isn't all that sophisticated, but that's the one distinction I can reliably make. ;-)

[hugs and a good night]

WOW! Chanel clothes are just beautiful, even the odd ones {G}. What a great venue for the show too.

Hugs and happy weekend easing {G}

Yes! I almost loved the venue and the spectacle more than the clothes! :-)

Hugs and a good weekend to you and yours, too.

Will ponder, not sure of an answer right away. But since I'm going to a wine tasting on Saturday I will try to see if I can notice a difference between sparkling wines and Champagne :)

Oooh, hurrah for wine tasting! Even if you don't apply yourself to that particular question, I hope you enjoy. :-)

Have a fabulous weekend!

Oh my, that show was amazing. And the clothes!

That should not be a hard question, but I'm stumped. I've got things that other people are surprised I like and things I think I should like, but don't, but surprise likes...I can't come up with anything.

Except maybe, I don't generally like action/explosion/tough guy movies, but I've seen Con Air at least four times and for the life of me I can't explain why.

Your example of Con Air is *perfect.* Yes. (I now realize that despite my love of Teh Cusack, I don't think I've seen it. Hmmm.)

Hurrah for amazing shows and for you! [hugs]

Although I love England first and foremost, there's a soft spot in my heart for Paris, though not so much the provinces, which surprises me in reverse. In general, I do not care so much for cities, but the few I really like, I REALLY like.

short list:

London, Edinburgh, Paris, Seattle,Boston. Perhaps because I've been able to wander around these on foot, which gives me a feeling of intimacy.

Happy Friday!

Yes yes yes to walkable cities. I wonder why NYC (in which I have walked) doesn't make my cut... 'Tis a puzzlement, perhaps as much as your lack of interest in French provinces. ;-)

Hugs and a good Friday.

Interesting thoughts. I suppose Porsches are the exception to my love of British cars, and Fiat Pandas are the exception to my dislike/distrust of Italian cars.

Jeez, what an interesting question ... I mean, there are things I have been *embarrassed* about loving, mostly in the past -- learning to own what I want. I'm pretty sure there is something, but probably my over-love of consistency makes me unable to unearth it.

::thinks::

Nope. Got nothing. My loves are completely unsurprising. Go figure.

H_P, H_P! Hi! [hugs]

Perhaps this question is too hard to see from inside? Maybe ask the Tall Man if he can answer it for you...

Whether you have a surprising love or not, I send thanks and good cheer and good thoughts your way. :-)

Well, I refuse to watch Reality TV -- but I love Project Runway. PR is my exception. I've never been one to get attached to actors just because they are pretty, but I love Orlando Bloom. I love looking at pictures of the man. Leave me in my shame. ;)

I agree that the Chanel show looked pretty cool. It would be nice to have the money one needs in order to be comfortable buying a designer wardrobe. For my next three-month vacation in Italy, you know.

There you go -- those are two very clear exceptions. ;-) And I'm very amused by the Orlando Bloom thing, I don't mind saying!

Yes, you should definitely have a designer outfit or two for the next vacation in Italy (three months or not)! With a black trenchcoat and perfect trousers!
