|09:13 am - In Passing -- a meditation on 80s saxophone, conflict, and serendipity|
This morning, I was working out to an old Billy Idol compilation (as you do, obviously), and as I finished a moment of high kicks, the playlist went to one of his slower tunes. "Catch My Fall," as it happens.
(I've linked you to a not great copy of his 1983 video.)
The song is oddly mellow, with Mr Idol making the most of his lower register. In fact, there's a grace and smoothness to his delivery which doesn't quite fit with his punkish exterior. The video actually plays up Billy-living-rough in an once lovely space now crumbling/burning around him -- the conflict is rather delicious.
To punch up said conflict, the orchestration includes both a slashing guitar lead and that ubiquitous, lyrical-cheesy, much beloved by me 80s saxophone. (Mid-80s Bryan Ferry, Tina Turner, etc etc.) The latter is perfectly out of place -- emphasis on the 'perfect'.
What's even more delicious for me is that the song itself is great, unexpected inspiration for the Project That Will Not Die. I stopped high-kicking and jotted down a few notes for tonight's hour o' writing.
Catch my fall, if I should stumble....
Thanks, Billy, and may everyone's day be perfect, may you not stumble without someone there to catch you.

Happy Monday to you, too, and I hope we all have someone to catch us, should we fall.
A good wish for today! Good thoughts to you, A.
The credit belongs to Mr Idol indeed. [applauds him and you]
Ahh, Billy. He sounded great when I heard him sing this live this summer. :-)
Happy Monday, L!
I thought of you when I started to listen. :-)
Happy Monday, C!

Happy Monday, Lori! :-)
Happy Monday, Gwynne! [hugs]
I do like that song. I'm also rather partial to the 80s (and early 90s) use of sax in all manner of songs.
Hurrah for saxophones, and hurrah for you. :-) Happy Tuesday!
