|03:00 pm - Grief and Honey Cake|
I am craving sugar cookies or peanut butter cookies in the worst way. Alas, I can't bake myself any -- because of Reasons, not the least would be the Thursday overindulgence.
So instead, here's a double-drabble with the Stonewoods (the LJ tag takes you to other visits with them, should you wish).
"Grief and Honey Cake."
Early snow has fallen, and the world is white and yet dark, and the trees are silent.
Alice sits on the sofa, wrapped in her last velvet cloak from over the sea. She is always sad on the first snowy night, always cold. The ice from old losses lies on her heart thicker than velvet and more smothering.
Morgan knows this, of course. He does what he can. First he adds warmth to the lamp he lights on the table behind her, so that whenever she shivers, she feels sunlight on her hair. She still feels the deep cold blanket of grief.
And he bakes her a honey cake. It smells heavenly in the oven – with spices she's never been able to identify, with love she always can. When he cuts into it, for a moment she's in their garden in early summer. Sun, yes. More, the buzz of bees he's summoned from across the sea: it is their sweet bite she tastes first.
But his efforts fail until she pulls him down beside her, until he wraps himself close and, laughing, steals a pinch of cake. Then the world is a golden river of honey, and Alice smiles.
May you find warm and sweet things to cheer you today.

Thank you, L! Thank you twice. :) Cheers to you!
Stonewoods! And I so understand Alice in every way. May every cold heart have a Morgan to warm it.
Thank you so much for reading -- and for this lovely comment.
I send warmth and good thoughts your way.
This time of year, I have come to look forward to your cookies, which I usually devour almost without stopping the moment they arrive...
But it is pretty chilly down here in your subtropics, at least at night, and not warm enough to make up for the sub-zero air conditioning in all the places we went to today! But the sun is bright and there is the thought of honey cake!
It is TERRIBLY chilly, if not downright cold! But I hope your vacation takes you to warmer climes. :)
(And there will be cookies again this year for you, although possibly not until New Year.)
Thank you, C, thanks for reading! [hugs hugs]
Thank you, Stevie! Cheers and a good Sunday, too!
